Six month food update

Well, we have entered the world of solid food! Over the last few weeks, we've started adding in solid food at dinnertime. Sam loves hanging out in his high chair and loves eating. When he's particularly hungry, he fixates on the spoon and whines for more food before he's even swallowed the bite that's in his mouth. So far, we've tried a handful of different foods. In order...

1. Rice cereal:
The first night of rice cereal, he was NOT a fan. Combination of the newness of eating off a spoon and the new taste of something other than breastmilk or formula. Night two, he started to enjoy the process of eating, if not the cereal. By by night three, he was totally happy and chowed down a whole bunch of cereal.

2. Oatmeal:
Oatmeal was a hit from night one. A tastier alternative to rice cereal.

3. Avocado:
The first time we tried avocado, we tried it all by itself, just mashed with a bit of water. He hated it. The next couple tries, we mixed it with oatmeal, which made it better. He likes the process of eating, so he was willing to tolerate avocado if it meant getting fed. But having now exhausted the two avocados that I had purchased, I haven't gone back to buy any more. We'll try again at some future point, but there's no reason to push right now.

4. Sweet potato:
Oh my. Sweet potatoes huge hit right from the start. (The picture doesn't capture the immediate "give me more!" expression on his face after his first bite.) We were out of town for a day and ended up buying a pouch of organic sweet potatoes, and he chowed through the whole pouch. Back at home, I mashed up my own sweet potatoes and froze cubes of them, and we are already through that first batch. He loves them so much. Plain, or mixed with oatmeal.

5. Bananas:
He also likes bananas a lot. I usually mix them with oatmeal, or sometimes with sweet potatoes. I had expected him to like bananas the best of all of the foods we've tried, but for as much as he likes bananas, he likes sweet potatoes even more. Go figure.

Bonus - Ice cream:
Yeah. Sam's gotten a couple (very small) tastes of ice cream. He loves it. Of course...I mean, who wouldn't?

Up next: Peas. And then perhaps spinach and apples and pears.

So far, except for rice cereal, oatmeal, and two cartons of sweet potato pouches (for traveling and for back-up), I've been making his food myself. Last night, in twenty minutes, I prepared, pureed, and portioned four sweet potatoes, a bag of frozen peas, and four bananas. Twenty minutes of easy work, and now little man has food for a couple of weeks. It makes me feel good to cook for him. And honestly, it is so easy and so quick that there's not even a shred of self-righteousness or self-consciousness about it. It is really just a simple habit to get into, and it's pretty fun.
